Youth Work is a non formal educational programme complementary to the schools and other formal education settings and is provided mainly through voluntary youth organizations.

The Youth Work section was established in 2007 to co-ordinate and support Youth Work provision and related services for young people. The part-time Youth Officer, Martin Fitzgerald, is responsible for co-ordinating Youth Work activities provided by organisations (e.g. Foroige, Guides, Scouting Ireland and Waterford Regional Youth Services) and local clubs and groups (e.g. youth clubs, uniformed groups, youth projects).  The Youth Officer works mainly with groups that have education through Youth Work as their main focus.  Various agencies both voluntary and statutory are facilitated to coordinate and share information about their work.

Currently available from the Youth Work section for the registered clubs, groups and projects are:

  • Support on programme or organisational issues, where appropriate.
  • Local Youth Club Grant Scheme: a scheme to assist volunteer led clubs and groups to meet their overall running costs
  • Use of the VEC mini bus
  • Use of the meeting rooms of the VEC

Currently available from the Youth Work section for the public are:

  • A database of all registered voluntary clubs, groups and projects providing Youth Work services to young people.
  • A profile of Youth Work provision in the county.
  • Contact details of the main Youth Work organisations and of providers of other services to young people.
